Philosophy Of Education

"Who dares to teach must never cease to learn." --John Cotton Dana.  When I was trying to think about my philosophy of education I ran across this quote and I knew I had understood why I wanted to teach.  A teacher isn't there just to teacher his or her students, but also to learn from their as well.  I think that if you go into teaching thinking you know everything and everyone else is wrong you will go no where.  I once had a teacher that thought she was always right even in open discussions when everyone's opinions should be listened to with a grain of salt.  I realized then that a teacher shouldn't be afraid to learn and to be wrong on occasion.  Another quote that falls into my philosophy is Nine tenths of education is encouragement. Anatole France.  I think that a teacher should be able to educate her students, but also be able to encourage them to learn on their own.  My favorite teacher always taught us the lesson then let us alone to do the worksheet, but walked around checking over our shoulders encouraging us.  This helped us to know we were doing the right work and also to make us excited about learning something new and to show us how far education can take us.
